Materials

MaterialStrengthsTrade-offs
Fiber cementDurable, holds paint, non combustible, handles hail well Heavy, needs cut edge treatment and proper cutting practice
Engineered woodLighter, good impact resistance, real texture Must be sealed at every cut edge or it wicks water
VinylLowest cost, no repainting Cracks in hail, fades, can distort in extreme heat
StuccoCommon here, smooth appearance Cracks with foundation movement, drainage behind it is critical

For most DFW homes we lean fiber cement or engineered wood. In a hail market, vinyl's cost advantage often gets spent on the next claim.

What Goes Behind It

  • Sheathing inspected and soft spots replaced
  • Weather resistive barrier lapped bottom to top
  • Every opening flashed, with head flashing, sill pans and jamb flashing integrated
  • Kick-out flashing at every roof to wall intersection
  • Correct clearances. Siding touching a roof surface, masonry or soil wicks water and rots from the bottom
  • Cut edges sealed on fiber cement and engineered wood

Siding On A Metroplex House

Hail is the reason most siding gets replaced here, and it rarely hits the whole house evenly. The elevation facing the storm takes it while the other side looks new, which is a conversation about matching existing material versus wrapping the whole house.

Foundation movement is the second factor. Clay soil lifts and drops a slab through the year, and rigid cladding telegraphs that at the corners and around openings. Stucco cracks first. Lap siding tolerates the movement better, which is part of why we lean that direction on houses with a movement history.

Heat matters too. West walls in a DFW summer cook, so we seal cut edges and use finishes rated for that exposure. In the northern suburbs, expect the HOA to have an approved color list before you fall in love with a sample.

Questions

Is fiber cement worth more than vinyl?
In a hail market, generally yes. Vinyl cracks under impact and fades. The upfront difference is real and so is the difference in how many times you replace it.
Do I need to replace the housewrap?
If the siding is coming off, yes. The barrier is the actual water barrier and it is the one chance to install it correctly and integrate the flashing.
Why is my siding rotting at the bottom?
Usually clearance. Siding touching a roof surface, patio slab or soil wicks water continuously. It needs a gap, and that gap is a code and manufacturer requirement.
